well some of you know that our lovely box max has some what of a big gob when he wants to well last week i have been researching the best way to teach your companion a "better" way to call for you. we understand all birds WILL and SHOULD be able to be vocal at the normal times but not when your stood RIGHT next to him and he makes you deaf
I came accross a lovely woman who helps rescued/unwanted birds a bit like bird line and she gave me lots of usefull information so i thought i would give it a go
so what we have been doing is when max screems (only for attention)we dont walk away, dont react just turn out back on him and dont talk/look at him till he stops.
Once he has stopped calling to us in the only way he knows how to we turn around and act daft.... we give him lots of verbal praise "GOOD BOY" "HELLO" anything in his vocab that he knows.
well we have been doing it a week and we can see changes in him but he did have a VERY VERY bad day yesturday where i could have cried with head ache
BUT today we have seemed to have turned a corner he has been going through ~ALL ~ his vocab to get attention!!! and of course the clever lad got it
well only about a month to go before he gets the idea but im sure i will have another paracetamol day before he cracks it |

You can do it Shell, Max won't like you dismissing him when he makes his naughty noise, but he'll love you paying attention to his good noises. By the way tesco's paracetamol are only 15p for 16

Just reading this about Max and I understand where you are coming from as i have Charlie the Citron, a BL bird and he can be really loud, especially at t time! Now is this a trait of the big Cockatoo's? Yelling as soon as you park your bum on the seat to eat tea and at about 5.15pm on the dot? he dosen't really yell apart from when the female citron goes out of his sight! would be interested to know? And good luck with the training! |

Ella always screams the minute I sit down for a rest/cup of coffee/something to eat/watch TV, she just has to be with me no matter what she thinks I am doing. She cannot sit quietly in her cage if I am about, at night when she is put to bed, if she is not covered completely, and can peek out at all, she will scream and scream to come out and be part of sitting down!!!Too's are just high maintenance I think, made worse I am sure by us doting Too owners lol Velcro birds they are referred to, and thats exactly what they are.....as for the conures, I am really lucky I have Thomas Nanday, and yes he can kick up a racket at times, but normally its drowned out by Ella shouting or Peetee dancing and singing or !!!!!!!! I worry when they are to quiet, the only time I like them quiet is beteen 8.30pm ish and 7 am...then I try and sleep lol |

Hi to everyone!
We have only been safe housing for 3 months and have 2 african greys that we think are fantastic, but what a learning curve we are on! I had budgies and cockateils many years ago. Then we went to a show that BL was at and it seemed to bring back my love of birds. I had no idea what you did to train a parrot so decided to clicker train them the same as the dogs we have! One CAG has nearly got the idea and mostly waits for the treat after the click. This is slowly training out unwanted behavior as I only click good behaviour and ignore the unwanted. The other CAG is nervous of the click sound so I adopt the same principal but without the click, I say good boy instead. They get seed every morning and some fruit but have to work to earn the treats, eg toast and fav fruit and nuts. It is working but slowly. Maybe worth trying?? One of my CAGs is very quiet and the other very vocal- he is slowly understanding the word no. I just click and treat them to keep them interested and interacting with me. I don't just use it for noise they make, but to train them back into their cages, step up,take food from me ect. As I say I am a complete novice so hope you don't mind my imput. |
