Hi Peeps, some of you will know that I picked up a stray canary recently and I'm wondering whether cage or aviary is the right choice for him (or her).

He was found sitting on a window sill of someones ground floor flat.

I suspect cage as he is not intimidated by humans...........but not hand tame but he comes out for a stretch of his wings and puts him self away when he is ready or when I tell him its time (lol).

I have zero knowledge of these little guys and want to make absolutely sure that he gets what he needs.

All advice gratefully accepted!

Cheers

Vicky

hi vicky
i suppose observe and see, let the little guy settle a couple of days then see if he will maybe take food out your hand etc, you will proberbly gather within a few days if an avairy would best suit him.
Ive had a couple birds in that thought def an avairy bird but turned out companion bird, also ive had what was thought to be a companion bird turn out to need an avairy, I have a pionus that will NOt step up at all but started after a week to take food nicely out my hand, he will let you get close but not touching distance, you will gather i think after a few days when his personality starts showing whe he settles more

My nextdoor neighbours have canaries that they used to keep indoors as family pets (they also bred indoors). They also have Karkarikis that were kept and bred indoors.Last spring when the flock got too big they built an aviary in the garden and they all gradually moved in together outside(birdies that is not the neighbours to!!!) and were joinded by some rescued Zebra finches. They are all very happy outside together. I think they can adapt where need be.
