Doesanyone feed their bird palm nuts? I saw them the other day on the cheap, they are apparently a Greys diet, do you think it needs a serious beak to crack them?

Similarly I was going to to get the green rat an xmas type nut selection (brazils etc) (get this, small bag with about 15 nuts £8...gulp), do you think an Alex's beak is up for a brazil or almond shell?

Ian

Ian,

Palm nuts are a bit of an acquired taste, I think. One of our CAGs loves em and the other doesn't. They have a high fat content, so don't overdo them. The 'nut' actually has a soft stringy outer flesh with a central hard core that Charlie CAG just drops. He does love to strip the flesh off though and an Alex could easily do the same. Charlie also loves unrefined Palm Oil, spread on his granary toast for breakfast.

Our 2 CAGs both love walnuts in the shells, but I have to confess that I pander to them and give them a crack with the nutcracker first (the walnuts, not the CAGs.) They both positively detest brazils.

Whatever you decide, I hope Oodie enjoys his festive feast - and don't forget the photos when he does

Threw my palm nuts out. None of mine, Sharon H or Sheila's birds like them. I tasted one and had to agree with the birds.

Apparently I thought Horse Chestnuts were palm nuts.

I finally found the real thing and it was a slightly different size that I expected. I think Oodie was waiting for the instruction manual.

What a gorgeous photo Ian!  Also you're keeping me chuckling with the names you call him - can tell you love him to bits really but you're being a typical man lol.

I have a pionus - he's having Christmas nuts at the mo but he can't break the outer shell on any other than hazlenuts and almonds - bless him.  He gets totally narked, has a go and then throws them on the floor.  It's easy for me to crack them and then give him them still in the shell so that he thinks he is doing it.

We are stocking up here, walnuts are cheap in Morrisons so its a bag per week with the shopping, and then hoover up any that are reduced in the new year. Its been difficult to get them most of the year, and the boys love them, its easier now that we have Scarlett around though!

Love the photo, he is just gorgeous! Mine hates brazil nuts too, which is really annoying because so do I! When I buy a bag of mixed nuts I was hoping to palm the brazils off on Pepi while I eat the walnuts and the Almonds - but he chucks them straight back at me! Why do they put Brazils in mixed nuts anyway?

ROFL, love the photo, Ian you mean sweet chestnuts, (conkers you can't buy - even where ever you are LOL (I hope!!!))
Palm nuts we normally buy frozen in the UK you have to be really careful with them as the go off, palm nut extract is a lot easier and safer, just spread it on toast, or washed pinecones etc... "cristmas nuts" are fine in moderation, you may need to crack them depending on the size (or lazyness) of the bird Walnuts are especially recomended (one a day), if they will eat them.

Did I mention that monkey nuts are BAD.....might of, once or twice LOL

Does anyone remember the trouble with Brazil nuts in the shell and the toxic coating on them? If you notice they weren`t for sale last year.
My Walnut supplier is looking into it for me to be absolutely sure they are safe and what, if anything they are treat with.
They don`t look as shiny as past years so I assume they have ditched the coatings otherwise Tesco and places wouldn`t sell them?
