Hi All

I have always admired the Galah Cockatoo from a distance - having never met one face to face.  That is until today!  I went into my exotic pet store to buy treats for Maxie, my BL Bird, when there he was in all his glory.  5 months old, chattering away, looking for a head scratch.  I am totally smitten and nearly handed over the visa card there and then.  Wish I'd taken a picture on my phone to show you!

Please, can someone with some experience knock some sense into me. He looked healthy and happy but now my heart is breaking thinking that he might not go to a good home.   I know he will require lots of love and attention, I know I shouldn't support the pet shop trade.... but I feel like a 5 year old.  All I can hear is I want him, I want him!

Would you buy him?!

You need to PM Margy. She has 3 (I think?) Galahs and a number of other Toos. Margy and Les are totally devoted to their birds but will tell you honestly how much hard work they are.

Good idea, speak to someone who knows first. Dont jump straight in. At five months old it probably is so cute and cuddly, but they can change when they reach their teens, and get hormonal and scream the house down.
I know macaws are a bit different but we got Ruby from a baby, she is three now, and believe me we have had numerous behaviour issues over the last six months. She is trying to dominate us at every turn, and has had a few goes at me, and a couple at Joe. As Helen says, try Margy, or Sheila could offer you some advice Im sure.

to be really honest.....my galah's are the easiest of all my birds!

We has 4, 3 girls and a boy, totally gorgeous, no where near as loud as the other birds, let alone the other Too's, the caique's and greys are louder by far!
I love mine to bits, they don't need that extra special care, but I will say don't have an only bird as a galah! definately like company.

Yes the shed dust, yes they can have a burst of shrieking, but that's just what it is, a burst. I'm sorry to everyone who thinks I should put peole off galah's but I can't.

I can also totally understand that you are so upset for leaving the little one at the pet shop, we did that with out first one and went back to get her the next day and we've never looked back!

yes they can be nippy, the girls more than the boys. the male is very cuddly, not so the girls, they can when they want to be though!

Totally gorgeous! No where near as needy as the other Too's either.

I know exactly what you mean Yvonne. I have always wanted a Galah ever since I first saw one, and that feeling grew A MILLION TIMES STRONGER!!! the first time I met one 'for real!'.

I have since agreed to a B+G, but even now wonder if I'm doing the right thing!! (come on peeps, talk me out of it!! lol).

Yvonne all id say is really reasearch them from different sources aswell websites, books members, I thought for well over 2 years and reasearches etc before i got my greenwing macaw i had to really consider if i could give him the home he needed.

They are gorgeous looking bird and have a personality to match.
As shell said drop Shelia an email before you make an decisions

Thanks everyone for your comments.

I've calmed down a bit since my original post, but will have to fight hard not to head over to the pet shop tomorrow, just to check he is okay, of course!  I know I don't know enough about Galah's yet.  It's great being on this site and gaining more knowledge and experience and, of course, having people that share the passion and interest .  Still a very long way for me to go though on the old experience front! Shell that's a good idea, I'll put my name forward to safehouse in due course and learn more about them, if indeed I'm deemed suitable.  It's so hard knowing that the poor little mite is sat there waiting to be given a home.  Hopefully the price - £1300 inc cage will mean that he goes to someone that has indeed researched his needs and wants.

Margy, thanks for your comments.  I've had a look at your photobucket and all I can say is wow and if ever you need a house/birdie sitter drop me a PM!  It's great to hear of your experiences.

I actually owe the pet shop a big thank you.  Came across it just over a year ago and there was a B&G which was beautiful.  Off I went home to 'research' and low and behold Birdline came up on my google search.  Without the shop I probably wouldn't have found you all!!

Thanks again and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

No problem Yvonne, hope you find the bird you are looking for!

And thank you for your kind comments about the babies in my photobucket!

As much as I love them all, they are hard work to keep them entertained fortunately, hubby is at home all day, so they are out of the cages all day and in the aviary, playing!

Margy and Les's aviary and birdies are absolutely fantastic - I have the pleasure and honour of being her ACO Everyone strives to give their birds a happy flock and Margy and Les have achieved that and more. I admire anyone who can share their home and have patience with that many Toos

Actually Margy, isn't it time that we were due for some picture/video updates on Charlie and the gang?

Well....all I can say is that my B&G is the easiest of all my birds!!!  Maybe she is the exception as I heard they are difficult birds to look after but Pancho is just brilliant!! My LSC has eaten a load of woodwork....little beggar  but then I like them to be out all day so I guess its my fault. She also gets very jealous of other birds getting attention. Ollie my grey...well he stripped his clothes off made me have a nervous breakdonw from the worry! But my beautiful macaw is just as good as goldl!  Famous last words?????? I hope not!

Well reading everyone's comments - I can say that "too's" are very demanding I have 5, a LSC, MSC, Brolly, and 2 Molly's and that is without the rest of my flock Macaws etc.. I love them all for their merits, and I wouldn't have any of them without safe housing them first!! The too's in my opinion are very very affectionate in a obvious way, but after spending time with different breeds you get to see all birds are affectionate and funny in their own ways. Too's are remowned for their cuddles yet my B&G loves nothing more than to snuggle in bed with me as well, and yes I said bed lol. A sunday morning is a ritual with all my birds coming to say hello and have a cuddle. But my Brolly though, every morning calls at 7am (like a alarm clock) he then comes up for a cuddle, and kiss, snuggles in with me, helps me with my morning drink of fresh orange and then we both get up!! and that happens every morning..but that is what he needs and wants...how do I know...because if I don't do this he will call and call until even the dead are no longer asleep. I found these things out by safe housing him...and in turn loving him and fostering him. I have seen birds in pet shops and like everyone, wanted to take them home, but this as shell says just produces a empty cage for the pet shop industry to refill and earn yet more money. You can research lots, before getting any species, and yes this is always a excellent option...BUT....and I say BUT...it still will not guarantee you a safe and easy ride with that bird! Safe housing is the next step...its a bit like try before you buy with the added back up of love and support from all of bird line crew...who not only want the bird to be happy and safe but you as well....and then in turn stops another bird from filling a empty cage gap...!!! Hope this helps!!

The only problem with that Loumay is that most people won't get to safe house a Macaw or a Too unless they have experience of that type of bird. Hats off to all the people that do safe house and I think you all do a fantastic job!. I wish I could do it, but it is not for me as I can't bare to let em go!! plus it would not be ideal for our situation.

I think if the macaws and Toos have some problems they go to the people who have that experience needed to help them but there are always birdies that come in that dont have problems as i would say as long as your realistic and have knowledge BL always gives you a chance!

Well sorry to disagree with some of you....BUT I had NO homing knowledge of my own with either Too's or Macaw's until BL and Safehousing...I went to shed loads of shows - learnt from people who had them, and STILL DO LEARN, they are always at the end of the telephone, Sheila, Lorraine, Jackie K, Mark and Andrea, to name but a few....and that is without my trusted friend and ACO, who I wouldn't have got my first too unless I met her Charlie!! So you see there is no reason to buy from pet shops...BL will give EVERYONE a chance....if you are not ready or there is a reason they will tell you why so that you can rectify it or at least understand why the needs of that particular bird or breed is not for you!!!

Oh and as for letting them go....if you are safehousing that bird and you wish to foster it...you put in a application for that bird...as I have with my babies ...and believe me I have not fostered all that have come through my door!!
