Hi
I'm new to Birdline and have just fostered a lovely Orange Winged Amazon who I think is luling me into a false sense of security because so far he is an angel!
Can anybody tell me about UV lighting and whether I should get it in his cage? Although his wings look unclipped, I think they have been previously because he does not fly well, and although I leave his cage open when I'm home he likes to sit either in it or on it. The room although not dark is not bright - should I get a UV light for him?
Thanks
Charlotte |

Hi Charlotte, I am sure that an answer to your question will be along soon. My neighbour who is also on here, asked the same thing recently, and Shaz was able to give her a contact for UV bulbs for existing light fittings. I am sure that one of them will pass it on to you. Welcome to BL, there are loads of knowledgeable people on here, ask Kerry, she even got advice on fixing her heating!!! |

Welcome to BL Charlotte. Amazons are very good at watching, an excited Ammie will fan their tail feathers and flash the eyes, in most cases they won't deliberately attack you (unless you are called Shell and it's a Mealy amazon) you just need time to let them come round to trusting you. Frankie who has been here since july has just started to come down the front of her cage and be near us & she wolf whistled for the first time the other day. They love being told they are good. What's his name & we need pics. As for UV lighting I haven't tried it myself. |

Hi Charlotte and welcome to BL One of our Greys (Charlie) loves nothing more than to sit on his cage and watch the world go by. Ammys do have a general tendency to gain weight, I believe, so you do just need to keep an eye on their weight. As many have already said, we'd love to see photos. I also haven't used UV lighting but we do have a daylight bulb in one of our standard lamps. I'm not sure it makes much difference to our boys but it does seem to brighten the room a bit. Looking forward to meeting in chat. Oh, and whereabouts in the country are you? |

Here is the link for very reasonably priced bulbs. http://www.bltdirect.com/products.p...ni+Spirals It is definately worth it. My BL CAG Norm spends 3 mornings a week in his bedrood, and like you, although it is 'light', it is still too dim for him on duller days. Thanks to Shaz for sending me link ;-) |

Thanks everyone - I don't know how to post the pictures on here!!!!
I had heard that ammies have a tendency to put on weight, although Pepi really isn't a greedy bird at all. I was wondering if it is possible for him to live exclusively on cherry tomatoes? As no matter what gets put out for him, that seems to be the only thing he goes for (although I was mugged by him on the first day home for some bombay mix!) Also I lovingly made him a foraging box that I stuffed with nuts and fruit - but he doesn't want to forage, he'd like his dinner served to him in a bowl! lazy bloke!
I was told he wouldn't step up - and indeed he won't for me. However my 8 year old daughter who he has taken a real shine to, just sticks her hand out and tells him to step up - and up he steps!
If someone can advise me how to get my pictures on here I will have a go - managed to upload him as an avatar - but not a great picture.
Thanks
Charlotte |

I don't know if my two Ammies are typical of the breed, but neither of them will fly unless there's a good reason. I have a Blue Front and an Orange Wing. They are clipped once a year, in late spring, so they can go out into the garden. The Blue Front is a very violent bird, and he was clipped the first time to stop him flying the length of the room to attack. Although he can fly (very well) in the winter, he doesn't bother now, and the Orange Wing hen is too idle. Both birds will fly if startled, otherwise they walk/climb. Perhaps your little one can't fly because he was clipped too young, or not let out of the cage for a long time, or is just... to lazy. Doddie |
