Hello,

I am looking for a companion bird for my TAG Ali, he has never really socialised with another bird, only fleeting visits at his vets. He has never really shown much desire in wanting a friend and has been a happy little chappy with me, however, as he is getting older I can't help but notice he is getting a little more needy and I beleive a friend would be really good for him.

I have looked into getting him a Timneh, as I would really prefer a Timneh, however I may have stumbled across a CAG in need of a loving forever home. They are both similar age, background and neither are hand reared, however, Ali is my number 1 priority at the moment and I need to know if TAG's and CAG's in general get along together.

Do CAG's and TAG's get on, or is it best to have a TAG with a TAG and a CAG with a CAG? Your advice would be very much appreciated. Also if you have any advice on mixing (if they do get along) it would also be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Kayleigh

 Hi there!

Can only speak from my experience, but my TAG doesn't really tolerate my CAGS at all   She does on occassion sit with one of my CAGS on top of her cage, but he is the only one she will bother with.  Saying that she doesn't seem to like other TAGS that much either, the couple I've had through.  I would say it's the same as anything, same species bird is always best, but even so there is never going to be any guarantee's.

Would you be happy with seperate time outs if need be?  If you dont mind that they might not be out at the same time then cant see it being a problem.  Even if birds dont socialise together, I still think having another bird round is good for them.

Do you have much information about this bird you are thinking of taking on?

Hi there,

We have a few congo's and  timneh's here and i find they get on ok , they do tend to

pick their own buddies though, as you can see in the picture below Winty (tag) chose Whooper (cag)

about 5 years ago, they are now joined at the hip, where one goes the other follows. They share a cage

and eat out of the same food bowls they even regurgitate for each other....

You sometimes get the strangest combination of birds that get along. I had a budgie who was completely devoted to a lovebird, also I know of a blue headed conure whos best pal was a greenwing macaw.
My tag however will not accept any other bird no matter what it is. A lot depends on the indivdual bird. He has to come out on his own or he will attack any of my other birds including our scarlet macaw. However I do believe in having more than one bird in the house. They still have the company if not the interaction.

Hi,
I have a C.A.G. who loves my cockatoo fiercly but hardly notices the timnah, All of them love the macaws I babysit regurlarly, I also have seen my C.A.G. Roxy feeding the baby budgies, Who knows what goes on in thier heads?
All I know is they only make friends with who they take a shine to, And that includes the humans they mix with as well,
My cockatoo and C.A.G. share a cage . they hate to lose sight of each other and preen each other daily, On rare occasions Gossop (the Too) will growl at Roxy and she just walks away untill gossip seeks her out again, It seems that Gossip calls all the shots but Roxy knows the rules,
Just be a bit careful on the first few meetings and let them sort out whos boss!
Best of luck, I do believe more than 1 bird is always better!

Do you have much information about this bird you are thinking of taking on?

Yes he is believed to be male but not dna tested, 12 years old and is semi tame - so very similar to my TAG Alucard.
I definitely want to get him a friend I think he would really benefit from the company

Hi Kayleigh,

I ummed and awwed about getting a companion bird for ages & got great advice all the way on here.

I'm delighted with the two together now, after the settling period, loads of worrying about the single bird being lonely has been lifted. All the same playing and 'neediness' happens but its much more balanced with 2 birds.

Everything I know about TAGs and CAGs can fit onto a stamp so good luck finding a suitable pal. It seems obvious to say that a tamer companion will probably make him more tame and vice versa. I had an extreme case of this ages ago when a very wild bird was spooking the very tame bird and there was a lot of birdy panicking going on.

Hi, I adopted a 5 year old C.A.G & a year later a 15+ (T.A.G). Nellie T.AG. hated me at first but with work we have socialised her she is a cuddle bug now.( many bites, tears & sleepless nights later)! When Cheeko came to us he was unsocialised & very nervous. He shared a room with Nellie, watched her interact & play with me. We moved the cages closer over a period of months & the closer Nellie came the more Cheeko wanted in on the action. We took the plunge (supervised) & allowed them out together instead of 1 at a time. I was amazed to see them run at each other & kiss, preen, cuddle & basically adore each other. Now they each have a cage but will often be found in the same one, sharing toys, food e.c.t. Cheeko is far more tolerant of me now too. Nellie has really brought him out of himself. They can however have their moments, Nellie can boss him & he gets enough of her, pushes her away but never any violence. I can omly speak about the birds I knoe but these two are now inseperable. Nellie is calmer, perhaps because she is never alone, perhaps because Cheeko meets needs I cant. What ever you decide take it slow I think thats the key.
