Rosie is 5 years old 6 in April, She is a stunning Rose Breasted Cockatoo. Rosie came to me 6 months ago. When I went to collect her she was hanging on the side of her cage & was in obvious pain, her wing was basically all twisted. I got her hope A.S.A.P When I went to handle her she clung to me & wouldnt let go, she fell asleep in my hands. She was exhausted. She had a huge cut/ infected pressure sore on the whole of her front, her wing had mulitple fracures, her legs were splayed, her toes all bend the wrong way, she was bone thin. I rushed to my vet who basically said it was too late. They were wrong! She was too weak to eat or drink. We had to syringe feed, water into her. She took her first drink after a week of 24 hour care & her first meal the day after, I cried with relief. Well 6 months on & she is average weight (huge improvement) wing fractures healed & wings almost back in use! The sores are completely healed too. Rosie doesnt have acage now as she spent 5 years in one in that state. It would be too traumatic yet for both of us. Throughout the day she has a flat play stand with bowls, small toys, chewing items e.c.t. She is usually attatched to me most of the time anyway! At night time she sleep in a large animal carrier in my bedroom with pillows for comfort. She is a happy , healthy girl with a great personality & every moment spent nursing her worth it. She can walk on her elbows very well & as long as she has pressure relief its no prob to her. She is learning to climb with support & can feed herslf, play & communicate with us. She has changed my life, I know I have changed her too. |

I love a happy ending, she sounds like she was meant to be with you, we have a Galah here, named Magic, she has some of the problems yur Rosie has in the feet department. I would love to see some pictures and may the progress you have made continue and you enjoy your selves together for as long as possible. well done both of you. |

------ My one aim is to serve the parrots in my care, to help those to weak to defend themselves, and bring alittle happiness into their lives, I prefer parrots to people but can handle them in moderation :) |

Thankyou all for knd words about me & my Rosie! She is a star, rules my life & I wouldnt change her for the world. Im working on her fear of everything! She wont chew wood, play or shred. I have started to wrap treats in paper, its small, she can handle that & rips the paper off to get her prize. We need to work on her getting some excercise, we are trying to get her move about more but she isnt happy about it. Any suggestions gladly tried ! |

Cheeko is my 15+ year old T.A.G. He was wild caught & came to me when his owner passed away.He has a bably damaged wing which unfirtunatley cant be fixed. He was in an aviery we were told but he never spread his wings, cant fly, cant climb very well & tends to jump off the cage & hit the floor like a stone, he has only 1 nail left due to chewing them all down ti the toe!He can perch move around as long as he can walk from object to object. He has a large cage & we are trying to refurb it to meet his needs. He hasnt been with me long but has kicked his seed habit. Again any ideas or suggestions welcome,

Both of my disabled babies have the bottom of their cages padded out with a towel - stops them hurting themselves when falling. Bex has a dog bed for when she's out, and sits on that, could use a dog bed for the bottom of the cage as well, depending how often and how hard he falls. Does he climb around the cage? And can he perch? Pets at home sell pine chinchilla wooden perches, and they are ace for birds that cant perch normally. Bex does a little of both - She's perch fairly normal for a while, then go for a rest for a bit on the flat perch. They are really good, and you could also add some padding to them if needed with fleece, or even vet bed? |

Thanks Mandy, I have padded up his cage bottom & added ropes all around the inside to help him to climb, he has now got a long rope toy as well. He can perch O.K .I also got him a round swing which we have padded out & made is cosy. When he out he is always supervised & I have been laying a thick quilt around the floor near his cage just in case. I think once he realises he can climb & gets confidence doing it he will flourish in so many ways, his mobility ,his health & his having fun. I had to put the food & water near the rope to get him near it but he seems O.K with it now. May I ask what disabilities your babies have? I am so glad to find someone else with special needs birds, there is NO info anywhere really. Iwonder how many birds have disabilities & why no one caters for them? Well we will keep on improvising ! |

Awww, sounds like you are doing really well with him! Re my babies, Scooby is perfectly healthy apart from his legs, both legs were broken as a baby, one leg is bent and sticks out to the side, and the other one curves - That is his good leg, but tbh he does really well considering! Bex my other disabled girl has a curved spine, so everything is shifted to the left, and her legs were also broken, but again she does really well! Im amazed at how well they do adapt given time and the right equipment, and Bex especially amazes me daily! She climbs round the cage, perches, although she cant fly and never will I dont think Some people (my mom especially) thinks I am being cruel keeping her alive because mom has seen how she moves around - It is awkward to the eye, but she's not in pain, and she does have quality of life, which is what I see as important.
Here is an early vid of Bex not long after I first have her, you can see how she walks, with her head down bless her. http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b324/Mandyd1975/Bex/?action=view¤t=Picture1753.flv
Shaz is another lady who has disabled birds - Believe she has a bad one in at the moment, sure she will join in when she see's the post. I believe there are others around, but what I suspect is many vets (like in the case of Bex) want to put the birds straight to sleep, and so many never get the chance of life |

Oh poor Rosie How did she ever get like that in the first place? I have 4 galah's, one called Rosie too, they are such loving little birds, very easy to care for and so gorgeous, just don't understand how she could get like that. Well done to you for nursing her back to health, poor little girl. |

Believe it or not (I couldnt) she came from a breeder cost £1400 & had splayed legs, calcium deficiency which her new owner never noticed. She was fed on sunflower seeds but couldnt perch long enough to eat properly. Through so many falls she got the multiple fractures. Hanging on to her cage constantly left her no rest time so she became exhausted. Her owner had Leukimia & didnt go near her for ages.During that time she suffered terribly. It makes me sick what she went through. Sh was covered in injuries that needed pressure relief but never got it so they turned into pressure sores. I will never understand it myself, would never want to if Im honest. Guess what - major steps forward- Rosie spoke her first word "HELLO" in the sweetest, sqeakiest voice I have heard! She has also discovered chewing, honestly every day she becomes more like a Cockatoo. She has but on 75g Now she weighs 245g which is still under weight but shes getting there now. Thankyou for all your kind words about me & my Rosie, Im soo lucky to have her & I appreciate her every day, she reminds me to stop feeling sorry fot myself & get on with it just like she does. Its amazing how much they can change your life! |

Poor Rosie! i just can't understand some people's outlook on life! Give her a big hug and a kiss from us here, she soon be a little fatty! My Rosie galah is only dainty and she eats like a horse and still only weighs 298g, so your Rosie hasn't got that far to go has she? |

My little galah tells me he is a "fat parrot" every time he is cross. I must weigh him and find out if it is true. |
