*stands in middle of room looking sheepish*

Hello everyone,

My name's Ray and I currently have no parrots. *Pauses for sympathetic murmurs and words of comfort*

I live in sunny North Devon, though that may be different tomorrow, not that I won't be living in North Devon, but that it may be raining and windy tomorrow in which case I will be living in Wet and Windy North Devon.  I have a girlfiend (please note this is not a spelling mistake) called Lou and a 12 month old daughter called Izzy...but I have no parrots. *Pauses for more sympathetic murmurs and words of comfort*

We share our house with a variety of other non human animals ranging from a black labrador to nine skunks (in case you were wondering what that strange odour is), with a cat, some mongeese, and a variety of other animals thrown in the mix...but sadly no parrots *Pauses for yet more sympathetic murmurs and words of comfort*

I am very pleased to make your aquaintances.

That is a brilliant introduction. Welcome from one of the sunny South Devon contingent, well sunny today anyway. What an omission from your household, no parrots, how could you? Vicky will be delighted to have someone else within striking distance, I would think she will be along to introduce herself, but there are loads of us in and around Brixham and the rest of Torbay. Is there a chance you might make it down to meet lots of us at Devon County Show?

Hiya. I always wondered what the plural of mongoose was!

I am also South Devon, a door-but-one away from Sharon H. Infact just got back from hers after enjoying a nice cuppa whilst Norman, my BL CAG, enjoyed a grape and a poo on her floor!

I LOVE NORTH DEVON, where about are you??

Hi Ray at last another North Devonite! Where about are you? We are at Clovelly daft enough to live down the street! Remember if you are ever this way and want to get in the village for free let me know. That also goes for any other birdline members who might be this way on a day out or on holiday. I live here with the "old man", youngest son, Lucy the dog and Peefer a Hahns Macaw,Jenny our Jenday Conure and a beautiful Umbrella Cockatoo who came via Birdline so as you are parrotless and might want to see what you could be letting yourself in for come & see!!!

Thanks everyone for the very warm welcome *blushes*.  Where to start?  I'll start a separate thread in the furry section to cover our small 'non-human' family here.  We're also hoping to make it to the Devon County Show this year, so will do our best to look out for any of you that are there, and we may well take you up on your offer to Vicky, thanks.
I have had some experience with parrot-kind, I had the 'pleasure' of working at a local wildlife park (the one with the big plastic dinosaurs Vicky ) a few years back, and whilst there (as a groundsman/gardener) I also got to have some hands on experience with some of the animals, including helping the bird keeper (an old friend...well not old but I have known him for years) bring the parrots in at the end of the day, and it was during this time I discovered how wonderful parrot-kind can be, in particular a pair of Umbrella Cockatoos there.
We have also been fortunate enough to have shared our home with an African Grey, even though it was only for a few weeks two years ago.  I currently work as Head Groundsman on three holiday parks and I was working on one of them one day when someone came to me saying there was a parrot on the roof of one of the caravans.  Well after a bit of to-ing and fro-ing, me and a colleague managed to persuade Mr A. G. Parrot from the roof of reception and into a large cat crate.  Knowing we have a bit of a menagerie here already it was decided that Mr A. G. Parrot would be coming home with me until we could track down the owners.  He stayed with us for about 4 weeks until we located his owner (which is a tale unto itself) and was, to be truthful, a bit gutted when I finally took him back (part of the above mentioned "tale unto itself".  In the short time we had him here he had progressed from being very aloof and defensive, to stepping up onto a stick (something his owners told me he could not do), taking food gently from my hands, and returning to his cage on command (for a treat).
Since then I decided that I'd like a parrot (or two) of our own here, I feel we could offer a good home to the right bird(s).  I had been looking at buying a young bird, but someone told me about here and the thought of 'rescuing' a bird or two appeals to us more than buying a 'new bird'.  Three of our skunks are 'rescues', one of them even made it onto BBC1's Animal 24/7 (as did I when they came to film an update...I don't do autographs, sorry).

Sorry for rambling

what a lovely introduction, I am a member from the north, have a flock of 7 parrots, of which 4 are BL fosters. I have 2 umbrellas, a galah,a goffin, 2 BHC's and a sun conure. I am sure the DEVONITES will be in touch soon and your get to know them all at the fundraisers if you get to go. We aslo have 4 Border Collies (2 over 14 yrs old) and 2 aging and very lazy cats. I hope your come into chat where I run a quiz normally about 9.30pm on all manner of subjects.

My one aim is to serve the parrots in my care, to help those to weak to defend themselves, and bring alittle happiness into their lives, I prefer parrots to people but can handle them in moderation :)
