You could get people to put thier opinions forward and nominate one person for each species to get it together and see if everyone agrees? |

I think generically, its very difficult to do "care sheets" as such based on temperament and characteristics. If you google cockatoo, the majority of the web pages will say that they make great family birds, they are cuddle bunnies, all the rest, and neglect the fact they can be extremely noisy, very hormonal, and each bird has a distinctly different temperament than the next. I'm sure that this encourages people to take these birds on, if you look at sites like mytoos and for the birds they are much more honest in their approach to being owned by these creatures! All birds are individual, I think you would find it hard to pin down characteristics as such for every species. |

yes it would be nice to know some of the bad things about certain birds, as you say conures are quite noisey, but not all, look forward to any new info posted |

I see what you are saying jane , I just think it would be difficult pinning down traits on certain species. I would hope that anyone considering taking on a specific species would make good use of the search function on this, and the old forum. I think instead of a species specific care sheet, it might be more beneficial having a section of members own experiences on specific species, as everyone views their own birds in a different way, and I think your experiences in this situation would be invaluable Jane! |

Hello again. I am the member who is still without a bird! Just a few thoughts. Here goes - from an outsiders point of view can I say that I read all the new posts just to gather as much info as I can so I think a list with a few short bullet points for the different species and their typical characteristics would be good. I personally would love to have more background info about all the birds up for rehoming ie what they like to eat, what their routine is, if they speak, what quirky things they do etc but having said that I'm sure all birds will react differently in different homes anyway. It would be more time consuming too for whoever puts the list together I know. Perhaps a scoring system to point the more inexperienced people like myself towards applying for a "suitable bird" 1 = hard work and def initely for experienced person . 2 = will come around once in settled environment. 3 = just needs tlc and stable surroundings. Everyone seems so knowlegeable on this web site which is excellent. |

Sheena, I certainly found it helpful to 'know' a little of the typical behaviour for various birds before I fostered! Yes, I agree that each bird is diferent and might behave differently in different homes but there are some basic points that can be posted I'm sure.
Suggetions:
How long they live, if they prefer to live with another birds or happy alone, food requirements, talking capabilities, NOISE making capability!!!, suitable for a first time bird person, generally good with children, something along these lines???? |

Yes Lesley I agree with you. Anything along those lines would be good. It is probably basic stuff if you know about birds but basic is good. |

Basic stuff was what I wanted/needed a year ago when I first got a bird, I certainly would/could have made some basic mistakes if I had not known certain things beforehand!!

Ok People This is something I would like to have and have wanted for a while, I know you all post for things on the forum BUT not everyone reads this.. we need things for the website front page!!, I have already asked for your stories on your BL birds, so far I dont think we have had one, You have posted your piccies on the thread from Dan.. why not enlarge on that and send Marc a piccie and a write up!!, funny serious it doesnt matter, As for the species stuff, I would really like a care sheet on every species .. SO that we can send out the relevant sheet with every bird that is fostered, info on feeding, cages, illnesses, known traits, general husbandry, etc etc. I am sure it would help a lot of new foster carer's as any info is good info If you are willing to do one.. any species, please send it to me at bsha1@aol.com and we can collate a 'bible' for rehomed birds and also put it on the website. I also asked for recipes etc for the website ,, please can you all help and make this website a place people will come to again and again, we need information and more information, please dont only post it on the forum, send it to Marc for hte website. Thanks Sheila |

I am thinking about writing up Chico's story, as the best transformation that I can think of, from a really bad start to a home where he is settled and adored. I will contact Hazel. |
