Hi all I’m new to Birdline and had a thought someone may be able to help me with. I read that I can only apply for one bird

at a time (understood), but how do I know if my application was unsuccessful and therefore can apply again?

I wasn’t at all sure how much information to put in my application so consequently I’m having doubts that it will be successful

Any advice on application forms and house checks would be gratefully accepted.

Paula

Paula,

The best thing to do when completing an application is to give as much info as possible. That way the rehoming team have as much as they can to base things on. Birds on the rehoming list are put on for a certain length of time (a few weeks, I believe) to allow all interested parties to apply. Then the rehoming team contact all applicants to discuss things. If the home is thought to be the most suitable then a local ACO will go out and do a homecheck (for a small fee). In the whole of the process, the bird comes first, so even though someone may feel they may be the right home, if the bird's needs are different, then they will be placed with the right home.

As you can see, this can take some time to sort these various aspects out - so patience is necessary, I'm afraid. But I'm sure you'll agree the team have to make sure that they get the match right.

Vicki Fuller is in charge of rehoming and, as you've seen from the membership thread, she and Marc are due to move home soon, so I suspect rehoming may be delayed accordingly. Incidentally, on the other post you asked about processing membership applications, you're already showing as a BL Member, so Marc's already sorted that out for you.

So, welcome to BL, please introduce yourself in the introductions section (whereabouts you from, what birds/pets do you have, etc.) and enjoy the forum.

I hope you are successful in your application, but please be patient, everyone here is a volunteer and we need to make sure we get things right for the birds' sakes.

hi Helen, thanks for the info and I will introduce myself and my family on the intro section. I'm often involved with fostering children so I understand that finding the right home is the most important (and sometimes the most difficult) thing to do. I’ve enjoyed reading some of the posts on the forum, there’s some very useful and interesting information.

thanks again

 Hi and welcome!

You will be contacted either way if you are successful or not. And sometimes, if they think they may have another bird suitable, they may well offer you another bird, not neccessarily one you applied for.  I agree that on the application form, put as much info about yourself as possible. How you feel you can help that bird, why you think you are suitable etc.. It all helps xx

Hi Nikki

Best to give as much info as possible. The rehoming team call all applicants anyway so you will get a chance to chat through stuff and mention anything you forgot to put on the application form.

Good Luck

Hi Paula and good luck with application.  It can sometimes take a while as the rehoming team are always very busy and it depends how many people have applied for that particular bird.  Perhaps you can offer to be a safehouse in the meantime as this tends to get sorted more quickly.  It would mean offering to look after a bird in need for a short time until they are rehomed and a visit from your nearest Area Co-ordinator to have a chat etc.  That is how I got started anyway and I had my first safehouses within a week!!

Hi Nicki and Paula, Debs just took the words out of my mouth. Helen and Mandy's advice is great, the more information you can give, the more the rehoming team have to base their decisions on. But do consider safehousing too, you learn so much from the birds, you get yourself known to the ACO locally and you might just meet your perfect partner and be able to apply for them as their safehouse, and it is so very rewarding.
