With the recent post about oldest birds in BL, I wanted share this old chap with you. This is our friend Friday. I believe the average lifespan of a cockatiel is around 15-20 years. This old man has been in our family for the past 28 years!! My dad caught him in a tree all those years ago. Friday has had quite a life. He has outlived a horrible encounter with a cat which left him unable to fly. He has fathered two baby cockatiels and he has outlived both of his wives! In fact after the loss of his last wife 5 years ago, it was decided not to get him another as he was so old - but he has still kept going! He now lives with my sister. We think he is a little marvel. Being such an oldie, he now prefers to spend more time quietly in his cage, but he still wakes up with a friendly happy face every day.
So as my sister says, here he is, faded, a bit bent, but still BEAUTIFUL!!!

Yep, he sure does have spunk - maybe thats the secret to his old age! When my dad caught him years ago, he whistled a beautiful song all the way down from the tree top (it was a tall tree!), a real charmer, literally singing for his supper! He has always loved to seranade his wives and his human companions, though now he gets tired very quickly! Doesn't stop him trying though!!! |

His longevity amazes me! I have read that the odd cockatiel makes it to the age of 30 - anyone actually encountered one that old?? |

I read the post from the start and thought it was an introductory post, I got instantly hooked on a teil who was 130 in human years, was really stunnned when I realised as the thread went on. It's so sad he's gone but in honour of Friday's long years here's what was going on when he came out of his egg http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/ilove/yea...ndex.shtml |
