I have started to knock up an outdoor aviery / flight for the budgies with around 6' 6" headroom inside. It will when finished be on and round the corner of the house, one leg will be 2ft x 6ft made from wood and 1" x 1/2" mesh with a solid roof (the mesh will be on the inside). The second leg round the corner will be 3ft wide and again 6ft long with double doors, this section will be half mesh and half shed for not so nice days. Heating and lighting will be provided inside to keep them warm.

I have looked at a few different avieries including my ACO's which was brilliant. I'm currently making all the panels in sections in the garage, when complete it will be pretty easy to throw up once the base is made i'll post some pic's soon but my garage is a tip so nothing just yet.

It's a bit of a conundrum TBH, for obvious reasons it has to have a double door system to prevent escaping birds but whichever end the door is at it presents challenges, it's because it has to be "L" shaped and it can't be more than 3ft wide,,, but it's looking good so far

The indoor section will be between the window and the mesh nearest the front

and the outdoor section in situ. Stlll got to make a base yet though which will be brick.

My outside aviary for my Budgies is just that - outside! They have a shelter for, err, shelter but they have no heat and they are fine all through the winter. I find as long as they have shelter and plenty of food they have been fine. I know your aviary will bring you and your birds lots of pleasure! Dave.

Steve,

Aviary looks great. I am in the early stages of building a large outside cage to house a pair of large parrots, hopefully macaws. It will consist of a very large full height cage on the outside of the garage, with a cowl over the top to protect against rain and sun and a smaller cage on the inside of the garage with access gained through the nest box opening. I am considering insulating and heating the inside cage for the winter months. Have you or anyone experience of macaws needs from an aviary enviroment?

Simon

Macaw aviaries. Maddie, Gary Wilcox may be able to advise you on the most suitable materials required especially for the larger parrots.
There is so much more to consider when catering for these birds.

Hi Gary, I plan to keep the larger species, B & G, Military or Green wings.
Best regards Simon
