Birdline is looking for help. We are is desperate need for more safe-houses in all areas to cope with the large number of birds that we are currently receiving into our care. Birdline safe-houses are a major part in our rescue operation and give incoming birds a safe place to be assessed and monitored when they first come in.
We would be very interested to hear from any members that would be interested, even temporarily in becoming safe-houses for Birdline. We are looking for people in all areas and would very much like to talk to you about how you can help Birdline rescue birds in desperate need or love, care and attention.
If you are interested in becoming a safe-house, or would just like to find out more information, please contact us via e-mail at enquiry@birdline.org.uk or via phone on 0845 643 1785.

Birdline Safe House Program
Any member is eligible to become a safe house but is subject to a home check before this can be achieved.
What does a Safe House do?
A Safe House is a member’s home that is used as a buffer for birds that are donated into Birdline. The safe house gives these birds a safe place to be assessed whilst a permanent foster home is found for the bird. A safe house may be asked to care for various breeds of birds and after a settling in period, write an assessment of the bird for the ACO Manager. This report is then used as a basis for the re-homing write up that appears on the website.
How do I become a Safe House?
Please contact us via e-mail at enquiry@birdline.org.uk, or via phone on 0845 643 1785 or via your local Area Coordinator. We will then arrange for a home check to be carried out at your home to make sure your home is safe and secure for birds. We will also have a chat with you about what is involved in becoming a safe house. If you are unsure of who your local ACO is, you can contact us via our helpline on 0845 643 1785 or via email at enquiry@birdline.org.uk. Once the home check has been completed, your local ACO will contact you to discuss any birds that need your services as a safe house.
How many birds will be placed with me?
This is entirely up to you and how many your local ACO thinks you can realistically cope with. As part of the home check, you will be asked some questions by your local ACO. One of these questions is how many birds are you willing to safe house at one time. Please be realistic in your answer.
How long will the bird stay with me?
This depends on you, your local ACO and the future foster home. As a safe house you will be responsible for assessing any bird in your care. Once you feel that you have spent enough time with the bird to write an assessment, contact your local ACO who will chat with you about the bird and your assessment. Once your assessment is accepted, the bird will be placed on the re-homing list. It is then just a matter of waiting for a permanent foster home to be found.
What if the bird requires medical treatment?
Birdline will meet the costs for any safe house bird requiring medical treatment. However, please be sure to contact your local ACO or the ACO Manager before proceeding with any treatment or veterinary visit. All expenditure must be authorised by the local ACO or ACO Manager before it is done.
Birdline is always looking for new safe houses in all areas. If you think you could offer help in this rewarding area, please contact your local ACO or call us on 0845 643 1785 or email enquiry@birdline.org.uk
